Shelby Ahrendt, PhD

Hello! I'm Shelby (she/her). I will join the Geology Department at Western Washington University (WWU)  as an Assistant Professor in Winter 2027. I am a Civil Engineer by training and like to ask questions about how water moves through landscapes and how that movement shapes hazards.

I am currently a Mendenhall postdoctoral fellow with the U.S. Geological Survey Landslide Hazards Program at the Geologic Hazards Science Center.  Prior to joining the USGS, I completed my PhD in Civil & Environmental Engineering within the University of Washington Environmental Fluid Mechanics group. I also worked as a Groundwater modeler for the Illinois State Water Survey and graduated from St. Olaf College with a B.A. in Physics and Studio Art.

Outside of the office, you might find me skiing, mountain biking, playing tennis, or competing in a heated game of Bananagrams.
