The newly-formed Hydrogeology & Geohazards group at Western Washington University is recruiting an MS student to join the Geology program in Bellingham, WA, beginning Fall 2027.

  • Landslide timing & mechanisms

  • Groundwater-surface water exchange

  • Flooding & hyperconcentrated flows

  • Landslide dams

  • Outburst floods

Potential Project Topics & Techniques

  • Fieldwork

  • Numerical modeling

  • Geospatial and remote sensing analyses

  • Data analysis & scientific computing

  • Laboratory experiments

Potential MS projects could explore questions related to landslide timing and mechanisms, groundwater-surface water exchange, flooding, landslide dams, and outburst floods. The specific direction of the project will depend on the interests and strengths of the student.

We are particularly interested in hearing from students with backgrounds in physics, mathematics, coding, quantitative geoscience, or numerical modeling, but prior experience in these areas is not required. Most important, is that students are driven to pursue skillsets that enable them to ask and answer scientific questions.

Applications to the Western Washington University Geology graduate program are due January 15. Interested students are encouraged to contact me before applying at: shelby.ahrendt@wwu.edu

When reaching out, please send a CV that includes relevant coursework and a brief description of your research interests. Please also share two scientific questions you are currently wondering about. These can be about anything! You do not already need to be studying hydrogeology, landslides, or hazards.
